Bristol City u23s 5 - 5 Newcastle United u23s

We return from the west country after a 10 goal thriller, where the spoils were shared and both sides came away with a point.

On one hand, we are delighted to get a point from the game, considering we were down to 10 men for over half and hour and performed admirably despite the disadvantage.  On the other hand, we went 5-4 up with just 3 minutes to go and thought we had nicked all 3 points, only to conded a 5th goal 1 minute later.

Eventual to say the least....................

Bristol City u23s v Newcastle United u23s

We travel to the west country on Wednesday to face an emerging Bristol City side who will not make it easy for us going into this game.

We have had a decent start to the u23 campaign and will be looking to continue that here however, we are not taking anything for granted.

Fans of Newcastle United have been happy with how the season has started as they see their club in 2nd place, only behind league leaders Huddersfield Town on goal difference.  So far they have won 5 and drawn 2 in the league, remain unbeaten and have conceded just 2 goals in those 7 games.

A close cup tie away to Leicester has brought the Magpies their only defeat this season, albeit on penalties.  So, so far so good however it is a long season and some fans have expressed concerns over the depth of the squad, especially when injuries and suspensions can grip hard towards the end of the season.

This was further highlighted in the home game against Wolves where Goodson made a number of changes due to fitness concerns over some of the players.  They went on to win that game comfortably however looking deeper into this, the warning signs are there.

Goodson said at the start of the season that he was happy with the squad that he had at his disposal and elected not to add any new faces, citing the deals done towards the end of last season for Gunn, Bergwijn and Jovic as good business for the club.

Rumours have been swirling around the grounds of St James' Park that Newcastle could be about to make a break through in the transfer market over the coming week, however Goodson would not comment on the rumours.

Managing Director Lee Charnley has always stated that there would be 'funds' available to the manager to spend when he see's fit, however as of yet, no deals have been forthcoming which has left some fans wondering if there is any money to spend on new players.

Shrewsbury Town 1 - 1 Newcastle United

A hard earned point for the Magpies on Sunday evening, as both teams basked in the sunshine on a warm Sunday evening.

We had the lionshare of the possession but did not do enough with it to grant claiming the 3 points, a draw seemingly a fair result.  Matt Ritchie put us in front from the penalty spot after just 5 minutes but Mexican internation Harold Lozano got the Shrews back in the game just 13 minutes later.

The results see's us surrender top spot, be it only on goal difference, after Huddersfield convincing win over Burnley.  It looks as though it's going to be a close race in the Championship this season however judging by the way things are looking after 7 games.

Shrewsbury Town v Newcastle United

A big game in the Championship, even at this early stage as we face a strong Shrewsbury side who will be looking to put one over us in this one.

We welcome back a number of players to the squad for this game after they sat out the midweek win at home to Wolves.

Newcastle United 4 - 0 Wolves

A very professional performance from us on Wednesday evening under the light at St James' Park as we outplayed, out smarted and dominated the game for learge periods.

3 goals within the first 29 minutes sealed the victory, a 4th was added just after the hour mark to put the icing on the cake.  Jovic was impressive and bagged a couple of goals whilst there were good performances from the likes of Lejeune, Ki and Murphy.

Joselu getting sent off after 38 minutes was the only negative from the game, however we were already out of sight for the visitors to try make the man adavantage count.

The win see's us go back to the top of the table, two points clear of Shrewsbury Town.

Newcastle United 1 - 3 Aston Villa

A disappointing result considering the start we have made to the season however our gameplan went out the window in the 1st minute after Sangare was sent off.  That completely threw us and we never really recovered.

We pulled it back to 1-2 with 15 minutes to go and looked to push on to get an equaliser however a 3rd goal for our visitors in the 80th minute sealed the victory for them.

Newcastle United v Wolves

We look to get back to winning ways as we welcome Wolves to St James' Park on Wednesday evening.

We have a number of fitness issues after going to extra time on Sunday so we will be forced into changes for this one.

Newcastle United 1 - Shrewsbury Town
(Newcastle win 5-4 on penalties)

We said beforehand that this would be a tight game and indeed that is how it panned out with penalties being the deciding factor after 120 minutes.

We are delighted to come through, especially as we played the majority of the second half of extra time with 10 men after Rondon was sent off.

Martin Dubravka was the hero on the night, saving from Kyle Walker Peters to see us through to the next round of the competition.
